On Handwork

Renate Hiller, co-director of the Fiber Craft Studio at the Threefold Educational Center in Chestnut Ridge, New York, explains beautifully and eloquently why working with our hands is so necessary and so satisfying.

  1. While what she says about the spiral theme and practising empathy through handwork is a little far-fetched for me, she sure is spot on when it comes to teaching children. Letting them use their hands to knead dough, work with clay, wood, yarn, fabric, paper and other materials is so important for them and should be emphasized instead of marginalized in schools. My nephew and niece (5 and 7) love to craft. Whenever I sit with them and we draw, cut, crochet, there is not only the joy of spending quality time with them, I also love to see how they lighten up when learning to do something new with their hands.
